Empty Oceans, Empty Nets
Tackling an ocean of issues
www.pbs.org/emptyoceansClient: Habitat Media in collaboration with PBS.org
Two sides of the same coin. Habitat Media needed to introduce a second documentary in their series on the environmental changes threatening our oceans. The challenge was to redesign the site with information on the new film, and show how both the films relate to our oceans' dwindling resources. Our solution was to split the home page in two, with each side presenting the navigation for it's respective film. We used strong colors to differentiate each film and keep users oriented.
Journey beneath the sea. The color pallet was kept dark to symbolize the serious and important nature of the films' subject matter. We utilized rich ocean based colors, in combination with underwater imagery, to give the user a sense of connecting directly with the important plight of our global fisheries.
The sites extensive copy was complimented with numerous images to break up text, and column widths were kept narrow to improve legibility. Serif typefaces were used to lend credibility and add a conservative tone to the design.
Part of the PBS family Being a part of the PBS family of sites required adhering to PBS' strict production guidelines. The code, imagery, forms, and downloads needed to fit within their existing framework and was reviewed by PBS production staff. We were able to deliver completed XHTML templates on time and the site was launched just prior to the first film airing on the PBS network.
