California's Wine Defined
Client: Calwineries.com, an online wine and information portal
Redefining wine. Calwineries.com was looking to expand its wine portal and create new partnerships with California wineries. To kick-off the endeavor, they came to us to design a new identity and business card.
The idea was to tell the story about the rich history and climate behind California's excellent boutique wineries. They believed that educating visitors on what goes into making great wine, helps consumers to pick and discover great wines on their own. They wanted the focus on the history of the wineries, the land, and the people behind the process.
In addition they felt the wine industry was often seen as stuffy and intimidating to both new and experienced wine enthusiasts. Calwineries saw it as a pursuit and a passion that all should enjoy, and they wanted to remove the mystery out of wine for their customers.
Our solution was to center the identity around a rolling Californian hill to represent the care wine makers put into the land and the growing process. The use of a soft earthy pallet helped make the brand more approachable, friendly, and keep the focus on the land rather than the wine itself. The lines of the rolling grapevines were partnered with a clean sans-serif typeface that calmly and simply speaks this message.
